How Curing Water Functions in the Swamp of Sadness
The defining mechanic of the Swamp of Sadness is its pool of Curing Water, a blue liquid basin that periodically rises and drains throughout the cycle. When an infected Smiler enters the pool while the water level is high, the game registers contact even though the liquid surface lacks physical collision. Contact instantly strips the Winning Smile face from the player avatar and prompts a character gasp sound effect.
Upon cleansing, the screen displays a two-line message:
"Your smile fades as you realize...
The harsh reality of being human..."
The player avatar receives the frowning Sad face, and any face accessories stripped during infection reappear several seconds later. Transforming through the water a second time in the same session can also result in receiving the Stare face. Curing through the swamp restores the human weapons equipped prior to getting caught, including purchased items like the katana or map items retrieved earlier in the run. Smiler-exclusive tools, such as the Taser, vanish from the inventory upon purification.
Standard human survivors take no damage from entering the liquid and cannot drown while submerged. While the pool is full, humans inside gain significant protection from grab attempts, because any pursuing Smiler that jumps into the basin touches the water and reverts to a survivor on the spot.
Layout Hazards and Stage Navigation
The Swamp of Sadness contains several environmental features connecting the entrance to the exit door:
- An Infecting Light source attached to a single camera unit mounted along the route.
- Elevated stone pillars that allow players to cross the basin without stepping onto the lower floor.
- A long, narrow wooden plank angled toward the far ledge that serves as an alternate ramp.
- An entrance board displaying the marker text: "swamp of sadness:(".
Stepping onto the thin wooden plank requires steady footwork, as player collision can dislodge the plank and fling it away from the ledge. When the water drains, the lower basin becomes dry ground. During this dry state, Smilers can sprint across the floor and corner humans without any danger of being cleansed. Survivors crossing the room must monitor the water cycle before dropping down, ensuring the pool is actively flooded if they intend to use it as a defensive barrier.
The stage appears during standard map rotations across regular servers. In elimination mode, the Swamp of Sadness does not spawn in the map pool, ensuring that infected players in that mode remain on the Smiler team for the full round.
Tactical Combat and Giant Elimination
The water level alters how players approach melee exchanges across the chamber. When facing aggressive Smilers, survivors holding ragdoll tools can turn the environment into an offensive weapon. Hitting an infected pursuer with a bottle or firing a blast from a shotgun knocks the target backwards. If the ragdolled Smiler lands in the high water, their offensive run ends immediately as they turn back into a human ally.
Player giants present a different interaction. If an infected player drinks a Giant Potion and enters the Swamp of Sadness, stepping into the Curing Water does not cure the giant. Instead, the liquid triggers an instant death mechanic, eliminating the giant on contact and dropping Smile Coins around the map. Knocking a giant into the pool using high-impact weapons provides an immediate counter to an otherwise durable threat.
NPC interactions in the swamp remain selective. Environmental road NPCs and Winning Slimes ignore the Curing Water and remain hostile. Smiling Gladiator NPCs, however, will revert when brought into contact with the water.
Water Interaction Decision Matrix
The effect of Curing Water changes based on the player state and toolset when entering the basin.
| Entity or Role | Interaction with Curing Water | Strategic Result |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Smiler | Loses infection, avatar gains a frown, and human gear returns | Cleanses the player without forfeiting the active life streak |
| Human Survivor | Remains unharmed with normal movement and complete immunity to drowning | Creates a temporary safe area against close-range grabs |
| Giant Smiler | Triggers instant death upon touching the blue liquid | Removes the high-health boss threat and drops Smile Coins |
Preserving Inventories for Weapon Achievements
The primary benefit of the Swamp of Sadness for veteran survivors is inventory preservation. In regular play, dying resets collected items, forcing players to locate each stage weapon again from scratch. Getting infected normally requires a survivor to accept defeat or reset their character, which wipes all held items.
Entering the swamp while infected circumvents this penalty. Because the Curing Water cures the character without counting as a death, the game returns all weapons previously held in that specific life. This makes the map valuable for completing the all weapons badge, officially titled "Obtained All Weapons In One Life." To unlock this badge, a player must carry eight specific weapons simultaneously:
- Ice Potion
- Invisibility Potion
- Hatchet
- Shotgun
- Handgun
- Knife
- Bat
- Bottle
If a player holding several of these rare items gets grabbed and turned, waiting for the Swamp of Sadness to appear allows them to jump into the water, cure the condition, and recover their progress toward the eight-item requirement.
