Potion Types and Mechanics
Potions in Infectious Smile alter movement speeds, grab resistance, physical scale, and crowd control. Most potions remain in your inventory as an empty bottle after consumption until you respawn. The Ice Potion serves as the single exception, disappearing entirely from your equipment slots upon activation.
Specific concoctions carry team restrictions. If a human drinks a Jump Potion or Speed Potion, they instantly transform into a Smiling before receiving the mobility enhancement. Other mixtures, including the Ice Potion and Fire Potion, function interchangeably across both human survivors and infected Smilers. Collecting both the Ice Potion and Invisibility Potion in a single run is also required when pursuing the all weapons badge.
Speed and Jump Potions
Speed and Jump Potions offer direct mobility boosts designed for aggressive Smiler plays. The Speed Potion increases walkspeed by 50%, while the Jump Potion boosts jump power by 60%. These mobility buffs persist for the duration of that single life.
Both mobility brews impose a strict defensive trade-off by reducing the user's maximum health by 30 points. Smilers spawn with a 1% to 5% chance of holding one of these potions directly in their starting inventory. When consumed, the Jump Potion emits green smile sparkles, while the Speed Potion radiates a yellow glow.
Ice and Fire Potions
The Ice Potion acts as an offensive splash projectile that freezes targets caught in its blast radius for eight seconds. Because it freezes both opposing players and teammates caught within the splash zone, positioning dictates its effectiveness.
The Fire Potion delivers ticking burn damage to opponents over time and functions as a direct counter to freeze effects. Drinking or throwing fire thaws frozen players immediately. Smilers can also activate fire while maintaining a grab on a victim to apply extra pressure during the infection struggle.
Invisibility and Giant Potions
The Invisibility Potion conceals the user's character model for ten seconds. While the body turns transparent, facial features and particle trails stay visible to observant opponents. Both teams can pick up this potion to reposition or slip through heavily guarded doors.
The Giant Potion increases Smiler size dramatically, granting stomp abilities and a crouch mechanic. While crouching, allied Smilers can climb onto the giant's shoulders to speed up their health regeneration. A giant can also throw passengers toward fleeing groups. If a giant touches Curing Water, they perish instantly rather than returning to human form. Learning how to become a giant allows teams to breach fortified bases that standard infected cannot enter.
The Iron Potion
The iron potion grants Smilers immunity to grab escapes. Under normal conditions, a grabbed human can strike back with a knife, hatchet, handgun, or shotgun to break free. Once a Smiler drinks an Iron Potion, knife strikes fail to break the hold, locking the human into the full conversion process.
The standard Iron Potion provides a full five minutes of grab protection. A secondary variant, labeled Iron / Potion, grants half that duration at two minutes and thirty seconds. Drinking the potion directly after initiating a grab secures the conversion before the target can react with defensive tools.
Potion Selection and Combat Decision Table
Each potion fits distinct battlefield conditions, balancing stat adjustments and stage puzzles against raw offensive output.
| Potion | Best Tactical Scenario | Cost or Drawback |
|---|---|---|
| Iron Potion | Securing grab conversions against knife users | Smiler exclusive; requires long puzzle interaction or dark jump paths |
| Ice Potion | Freezing grouped enemies during choke-point pushes | Removed from inventory on use; splash freezes teammates if misplaced |
| Giant Potion | Stomping defense lines and tanking damage | Requires a green key or bomb; larger hitbox attracts concentrated attacks |
| Fire Potion | Melting ice locks and burning grabbed targets | Deals damage over time; limited map spawns |
| Invisibility Potion | Infiltrating human clusters or escaping smiler ambushes | 10-second duration; facial textures and particle trails remain visible |
| Jump Potion | Bypassing map barricades and high platforms | Reduces maximum health by 30 points; infects humans who drink it |
| Speed Potion | Chasing armed runners across long corridors | Reduces maximum health by 30 points; infects humans who drink it |
Stage Spawns and Puzzle Requirements
Potions do not appear on every stage. Reaching specific recipes requires team coordination, keycards, or interactive environment triggers.
- Freezer and Big Freezer: The Ice Potion rests inside low-temperature chambers. The Big Freezer setup requires one player to hold an exterior button while a partner grabs the bottle, preventing the runner from freezing inside. Humans carrying a spear can strike the interior wall mechanism to open the exit solo.
- CornLab: Houses the Jump Potion on the left elevated ledge alongside Invisibility Potion spawns. Survivors exploring CornLab need a white key to open the holding area.
- Abandoned House: Contains the Invisibility Potion in an upper bedroom reachable by jumping through exterior side windows, situated near the table where the hatchet spawns.
- Headcam and Slime Room: Hide the Giant Potion behind reinforced structures. Headcam requires holding the interaction key for three seconds to arm a bomb, paired with a green key to clear the doorway. Slime Room requires detonating a bomb against a cracked wall before using the green key.
- Lockers: Contains a Giant Potion accessible by using a red key to retrieve the green key from secure compartments.
- Lava Land and Volcano Pit: Spawn the Fire Potion across hazardous terrain sections alongside Prison and Shaky Magma stages.
- Aquarium: Houses the five-minute Iron Potion behind reinforced glass. A Smiler must hold the interaction key on the overhead support beam for 25 continuous seconds, dropping the beam to shatter the glass barrier.
- Steel Bridges: Spawns an Iron Potion along lower structural beams. Navigating this drop requires increasing device brightness and using shift lock to land on narrow girders in the dark.
- Warehouse: Contains the shorter-duration Iron / Potion on cargo shelving, providing two and a half minutes of grab protection.
- Warhead: Spawns an Ice Potion on the surface after players eliminate all Smilers to detonate the central nuclear warhead, exposing cave routes containing weapons and keys.
Private server owners can bypass stage rotations by choosing maps directly through chat commands, or by spawning the volatile facility stage to secure open testing areas for giant transformations.
Applying Potions in Human and Smiler Encounters
Potions alter how humans defend objectives and how Smilers coordinate grabs. Survivors learning how to survive as a human must monitor opponent glows before engaging in close-quarters melee. A Smiler with a green or yellow aura possesses higher jump heights or closing speed, meaning standard bat swings will miss if timed for normal 18-walkspeed targets.
When facing an opponent who drank an Iron Potion, human knife escapes become impossible. Survivors caught by an iron-boosted Smiler must rely on teammates to strike the attacker with bats, chains, or firearms from outside the grab radius. Carrying a Fire Potion allows humans to cancel out hostile Ice Potion splashes, breaking out of an eight-second freeze before Smilers can close the gap. Combining stage keys with potion routes provides consistent advantages regardless of which team controls the map.
